Tai timu, tai pari - The tides of change

Porirua City Council

2022

Tai Timu, Tai Pari - The Tides of Change is a matariki story that reflects on how our present is shaped by our past and informs our future.

It was shown on a sweeping, large scale screen, featuring video of local kaumatua & kuia recounting their memories of the area, which we brought to life through animation and music.

The story told of the significance of Matariki, with aroha for the food bowl of the Porirua harbour. Porirua was a pātaka kai for the community. Growing and sharing food shaped and nurtured mana whenua and manuhiri alike.

As the tide changes, and we look to the future, we draw on the knowledge and stories of our past, to help us nourish our whānau and community, so that we all thrive together.
And its surrounding areas as told by kaumatua who have lived in the area all their lives.

Our thanks to the hapu of Takapūwāhia and to Ngāti toa for allowing us to help share their stories; and to the Ngāti toa rangatahi kapahaka group.
